Why Our Students Must Learn to Code
Coding is essential in the classrooms because Coding is something all around us. We can use Coding to create computer software, apps and websites. Your browsers, your OS, the apps on your phone, the video games you play, and this website – they’re all made with code.
Recently, Gr.2 students have been learning to code with Scratch Jr challenges. These challenges are open-ended, encourage creativity, develop debugging skills, and teach the basic coding concepts.
Students are having a lot of fun sharing what they have created. Here are some examples of their work:
The next step is to continue to develop algorithm with coding concepts. The teachers are finding that some students could benefit from having more extension lessons and learning to program with other languages and make apps. All students will have a basic coding knowledge to apply in other areas. There are so many opportunities for students to use coding skills and concepts to learn about the world around them.
